I took these pictures on a weekend visit to Salzburg in 2004. I went to Salzburg because it was the cheapest ticket destination I could get that weekend. As it turns out it is one of my favorite cities in Europe! What a fun place to spend a weekend! I am standing in the fortress picured on the left when I took the picture above. It is one of the largest fortresses in Europe. The mightiest fortress of central Europe, a powerful castle sitting in a prominent position, undoubted Salzburg’s prime attraction and most dominant feature of the city’s skyline: the “Festung Hohensalzburg” or “Hohensalzburg Fortress” ought not to be missed at any Salzburg visit.
The first record of a fortification on the southern side of the Mönchsberg Mountain dates back to Roman time, but this is not certain. However, it would make sense: from the position of Hohensalzburg one can see the surroundings of Salzburg and the Salzach river better than anywhere else in the entire city.
